Got any ideas for Florida’s universities? Then go to Lakeland next week.
The chancellor of the state university system will be there Tuesday for a roundtable discussion and public hearing on the system’s future. Chancellor Mark Rosenberg is leading an initiative called Forward by Design to craft a new master plan for the system, and the Lakeland forum will give citizens a chance to put their two cents in. The starting point for discussion: The controversial Pappas Report, which, among other suggestions, argues that Florida should create a separate category of universities, community colleges and even private non-profit colleges dedicated solely to undergraduate education. “We know our university system is going to grow,” said Carolyn Roberts, who chairs the Board of Governors, which oversees the system. “The question is, will that growth be by design, or by default?”
The roundtable discussion will begin at 4 p.m. at Lakeland High School. An hour of public comment will follow at 5:30 p.m. If you can’t make it to the hearing, you can still send in your comments via e-mail, or a blog, or a Web-based survey. For more information, click here.
