Hillsborough attendance down on Jan. 2, spokesman says

Hillsborough County school district spokesman Stephen Hegarty sends word in a press release that today's attendance was 82.35 percent compared with 90.7 percent on the first day back from Winter Break in 2011. "Several factors likely contributed to the relatively low attendance," Hegarty wrote. "Many county offices and private businesses were closed today in observance of New Year's Day, which fell on a weekend this year. Also, attendance typically is lower on Mondays and often is lower on the day that students are scheduled to return after a break...Also, the Tampa Tribune mistakenly reported Sunday that Hillsborough County schools would be closed on Monday."
