Hillsborough board will name principals and vote on more iPad purchases

iPads. Remember that controversy? Hillsborough County School Board member Stacy White was somewhat incredulous last year when the district spent close to $1-million for iPads, accessories and training for its new single-gender middle schools.

The money came from Title 1, which supports learning gains in low-income schools; and the magnet grant that launched the Franklin Boys Preparatory School (its companion, Ferrell Girls Preparatory School, was created with existing district dollars). The schools issued the devices to all students, who leave them behind in chargers at the end of the day. Says the proposal: "The use of the iPad technology has been fully integrated at both schools enabling the students to use cutting edge technology to increase student engagement, accelerate learning and expand global access to the world."

Each school now has about 300 students and will receive an expected 200 more in August, said Carla Sparks, the district's supervisor of single gender programs. Most will be incoming 6th graders; a few will join the 7th and 8th grades.

Buying the new iPads and assorted accessories will cost $300,000.

The issue comes to a vote at Tuesday's meeting, which White said he will not be able to attend.

Also Tuesday the board plans to name principals for these schools: Lincoln, Foster, Cimino and Mort Elementary Schools; and Monroe Middle School.
