Hillsborough closes three schools over swine flu

TAMPA -- There will be no school this week for students at Liberty and Wilson middle schools and Freedom High School.

All three were closed after Hillsborough County school and health department officials found two probable cases of swine flu at Wilson and Freedom. Liberty Middle was closed because it shares a cafeteria with the latter school.

They were among six suspected cases in the Tampa Bay area -- five in Hillsborough and one in Pinellas County. Nine others have been found in other Florida counties.

At a press conference today, superintendent MaryEllen Elia said the district would thoroughly clean the buildings according to federal guidelines, check schools for other potential cases, and reach out to families with known risk factors.

The school district has set up a special Web page with updates and swine flu links. It will also be posting bulletins at  http://twitter.com/hillsboroughsch.
