Hillsborough officials take issue with 'Waiting for Superman'

TAMPA -- You know a movie is getting some traction when local school superintendents start to complain.

In an opinion piece in today's St. Petersburg Times, Hillsborough superintendent MaryEllen Elia and union president Jean Clements say the controversial education documentary Waiting for Superman paints a false picture of what it takes to actually improve public schools. Too much about charter schools, they say, and not enough on how school districts and unions are working together on behalf of the nation's children.

"Teachers and teacher unions agree: Some people don't belong in the classroom," they write. "But that doesn't mean teachers are the problem. To the contrary, teachers are the solution. We cannot simply fire or test our way to higher achievement."

Is their film review on the mark? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
