Hillsborough school board prepares to redraw member districts
After workshops, hearings and sparsely attended community meetings around the county, the Hillsborough County School Board will soon update its single-member districts.
State law requires the board to set boundaries in a way that distributes population among them evenly. Population shifts reflected in the 2010 census show they need to be adjusted. District 1 in west Hillsborough, represented by Susan Valdes, has 212,859 members and central Tampa's District 5, represented by chairwoman Doretha Edgecomb, has 229,647. Each district should have approximately 245,845. East Hillsborough's District 4, home of Stacy White, has the most constituents at 271,883.
Meetings at area high schools attracted few participants, with media and school board members sometimes outnumbering members of the public at large.
The board will review four options on Tuesday night before settling on new boundaries. In addition to the five members with geographic districts, the board has two at-large members.
