Hillsborough's Calcines runs for school board again
Hillsborough County School Board member Susan Valdes now has competition in her bid for re-election. Eddy Calcines, a local business owner, author and sometime politician, filed with the Supervisor of Elections office on Tuesday.
Cuban-born Calcines, 56, is semi-retired from the hair-styling business, is author of the book, Leaving Glorytown: One Boy’s Struggle Under Castro, and runs a program for at-risk students at Spoto High School.
He ran unsuccessfully for the Hillsborough school board in 1996, and for state house in 2000.
Valdes, who was born in New York to Cuban parents, has served on the school board since 2004.
With the qualifying deadline two months away, only one incumbent candidate -- Doretha Edgecomb -- is so far uncontested. Jack Lamb has two opponents while Carol Kurdell, who holds an at-large seat, has six.
