Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

House Education Policy Council passes HB 7189; next stop, the House floor

The bill that teachers have vehemently opposed is on its way to the Florida House floor.

The House Education Policy Council just passed the bill on a partisan vote, 12-5.

The Rules and Calendar Council is standing by to put it before the full House for a vote later this week.

Sounds like Gov. Charlie Crist can hardly wait for it to come to his desk. In a statement released by his office today, Crist said:

“I want to commend the House of Representatives for holding extended hearings today on HB 7053 and HB 7189. It is our duty as elected officials to ensure that the legislative process is transparent and allows the opportunity for Florida’s teachers and parents to have an open dialogue with their elected representatives.

"These bills build on the education reforms that have earned Florida great improvements in academic rankings year after year. In fact, today, Florida is 8th in the nation; it is good progress, but we can still do more for our children. I look forward to the continued dialogue and hope to have comprehensive reform bills on my desk for action this Session.”
