How much student information should be public?
State and federal laws set guidelines for school districts when it comes to releasing student records. Grades, social security numbers and the like are generally off limits. "Directory" information, such as address and date of birth, is not.
The Brevard School Board is now raising questions about just how much directory information they want to release when asked.
The requestors, in case you're wondering, are usually colleges, researchers, class ring vendors and the military.
Florida Today reports that Brevard board members say they want to comply with public records rules, but also want to balance that with the need to protect students.
"I think there needs to be a little more control, in my opinion, on who can get this information and who can't," board member Andy Ziegler said. "I don't feel that a person should be able to find out where a student lives."
