How should state punish shoplifting teachers?
It's a no-brainer that teachers who sleep with students should be permanently booted from the profession. But what's a fair punishment for lesser crimes?
Six of the 23 Tampa Bay cases headed to the state's teacher sanctioning board this week involve shoplifting charges. One Hillsborough teacher reportedly tried to sneak a Porterhouse steak out of a Publix. Another reportedly stole two pairs of shoes, then returned them the following day to get credit, then returned the day after that to try to steal another pair.
Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith is proposing two years of probation for the alleged shoe thief. He’s recommending letters of reprimands for the other five. Sound fair to you?
