Imagine Charter could close after academic failures

24

July

It's no secret that Imagine Charter School has been struggling.

The elementary school in St. Petersburg has been F rated for all but one year since it opened in the 2008/09 school year. The school board, acting on Pinellas County schools superintendent John Stewart's recommendation, voted in May to give Imagine a one-year contract extension to allow district officials to review its latest academic data. The reprieve didn't help - the school received another F this year, earning far fewer points than any other school in the county.

Stewart has come back now with a recommendation that the school board approve a 90-day notice to terminate Imagine's charter. Board members will consider it during their 5:30 p.m. meeting today. (See page 718 of the agenda.) If approved, Imagine can ask for a hearing, which would be conducted within 60 days.

If closed, Imagine's 250 students would be reassigned to district schools. (Unless their parents opted to send them somewhere else.)
