Imagine School pulls high school bid for Pasco County

Imagine School at Land O'Lakes, currently serving kindergarten through eighth grade, had hoped to add a high school to its offerings.

Before the Pasco County School Board could act on the charter school's application, though, Imagine pulled the plug.

"The local Imagine board has voted to withdraw its application," assistant superintendent Renalia DuBose said.

The action came in a public meeting, DuBose said, but has not been formally reported to the school district.

Imagine School at Land O'Lakes recently has faced criticism of its operations by the Pasco County school district and some parents. It tried unsuccessfully to expand its enrollment last summer, but was rebuffed after failing to secure the proper county permits. Lately the school's leadership has looked into moving to a permanent location, out of the office center where it operates.

DuBose told the Gradebook that the school's preferred site appears to have fallen through, putting the relocation in limbo.

The Virginia-based Imagine Schools group, which runs several schools in Florida and elsewhere, has come under a great deal of scrutiny nationally for the way it spends money and how much influence it wields over the local schools, which are supposed to have community leadership.

That didn't stop Florida governor-elect Rick Scott from naming Imagine CEO Dennis Bakke to his education transition team, though.
