On the inside track to Pasco district's second-in-command position
As the application deadline passed Tuesday, Pasco County School Board members wanted to know why superintendent Heather Fiorentino had not advertised the assistant superintendent-curriculum and instruction job nationally.
"Personally, I like to recruit from within," board member Alison Crumbley told the Gradebook later. "But if we don't have the right person, the we should expand our options. ... That's how we expand our base of knowledge."
But Fiorentino quickly dismissed the idea out of hand. The district always looks internally for its second in command, she said, to maintain a continuity of knowledge in the way Pasco County does things. The ad ran only on the district website.
Board member Steve Luikart suggested the district should do a multi-county or national search, and post the ad for more than five days. That's what it has done in seeking a director of finance, Luikart said, and the top curriculum post deserves the same consideration.
If Fiorentino stays local, she has two choices among the 12 applicants -- assistant superintendent-secondary Tina Tiede and leadership development director John Mann. Both have been in the district more than 25 years. Most of the other candidates hail from out of state. They are:
Wayne Alexander – Assistant Principal at Grasso Technical High School in Groton, CT, and former Hernando County superintendent
Steven Cobb – Chief Academic Officer for Fort Wayne Community Schools, Indiana
Andrei Ghelman – Assistant Principal/Acting Principal for Damascus High School in Maryland.
Sharon Hahn – Principal Benjamin Parker Elementary, Indiana from 1990 to 2002. Currently a facilitator/presenter for Department of Education CLASS Program for Pike Township, Indiana.
Michelle Irwin – Senior Director of Community Relations Programs, L’Anse Creuse Public Schools, Harrison, Michigan.

Shawyn Newman – Assistant Principal Lecanto High School, Lecanto Florida
Christopher Pellant – President Cranium Connections, curriculum writing company and educational consulting. Recently was Principal Marco Island Academy, Marco Island, FL
