Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Interesting connection in class size fight

We received a press release today touting all the newspaper editorials in favor of Amendment 8 from a group called Protect Our Constitution, and just found it slightly ironic that the same group that pushed to make it harder to amend Florida's constitution back in 2006 now is among the backers of a controversial constitutional amendment.

Protect Our Constitution, which counts the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Charter Schools USA among its big contributors, was a key player in the effort to require 60 percent voter approval for changes to the constitution instead of the previous 50 percent plus 1. Its stated mission is to "stop the attack on Florida's Constitution by special interest groups through unnecessary and harmful amendments by informing and educating Florida's voters on the constitutional amendment process."

Many observers have suggested that getting 60 percent of voters to agree to Amendment 8 will be a tough, if not impossible, task. Won't it be interesting if its efforts of four years ago hinder its efforts of today? Just thinking out loud.
