Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

It's all included

Questionmarks When they got the bad news Tuesday, several school superintendents weren't sure what exactly would get cut if they have to slash 4 percent from their state funding for 2007-08. Would categorical funding, such as transportation and class-size reduction support, be counted? What about money for the newly passed teacher performance pay? Special education guarantees? Yes, yes, yes and more, deputy Florida education commissioner Linda Champion has informed them.

In a memo sent late Wednesday, Champion explained that little would be spared in the state's effort to deal with an expected revenue shortfall of more than $1-billion. State money for voluntary prekindergarten, instructional materials, even busing (which district leaders quickly point out doesn't meet the full cost as it is) all are on the table.
