Lacoochee Elementary to get a new principal
After a two-week investigation, Karen Marler is being removed as principal of Lacoochee Elementary, which serves Pasco County's poorest community. She will be reassigned as a principal on assignment working with migrant families on the east side of the county.
Shirley Ray, assistant principal at Seven Oaks Elementary School, has been appointed interim principal of Lacoochee effective Wednesday. Ray began working with the school district in 1994 as a substitute teacher, becoming a certified teacher in 1997 and getting her assistant principal post in 2007.
Superintendent Heather Fiorentino announced her plans for this change this morning, just before a School Board meeting. She has spent the past two weeks getting information relating to complaints about Marler's management. Marler, who joined the district in 1985, has been Lacoochee principal since 2004.
"I was truly hoping she would stay," community activist Judy Geiger said. "But she's still in the area."
More details as they become available.
