Lacrosse is scoring points on Hillsborough school board
They can't decide anything this morning, but some Hillsborough school board members are warming to the idea of a pilot, fee-based lacrosse program in the high schools.
There are a lot of issues to consider including gender equity. Hillsborough is barely in compliance with Title 9, and that's when you include cheerleading. And lacrosse attracts boys more than girls.
At the same time, members Candy Olson and April Griffin said at this morning's workshop that they are open to the idea, particularly since college scholarships are available for lacrosse players. They are concerned about gender equity and economic equity; Olson would like to see lacrosse's backers fund programs at inner-city schools.
We'll have a more complete story later.
