Land O'Lakes High on tap to host Mitt Romney rally

UPDATE: RNC officials contacted the Pasco school district at about 3 p.m. to postpone their visit to Land O'Lakes High. A new time has yet to be scheduled.

ORIGINAL POST: Representatives from the Republican National Committee are headed to Land O'Lakes High School on Tuesday afternoon to determine whether the school can handle a Mitt Romney rally on Saturday evening.

"We're going to get in golf carts and ride around ... to see what it would take to secure the perimeter," Pasco school district assistant superintendent Renalia DuBose said. "It is not a definite until they get here and look around."

Even though the details are not cemented, school officials have begun preparing for the event. They've posted the rally on their school activities calendar for 5 p.m. Saturday in the football stadium. And principal Ric Mellin has sent a memo to staffers letting them know that the back of the school will likely be off limits all day Friday and Saturday for preparations.

DuBose, meanwhile, stressed that the school district is not endorsing or underwriting the political event.

"They have requested a facilities usage agreement to rent the stadium," she said. "We are not giving him the stadium."

Romney, who accepted his party nomination just 24 miles south of the school, has made several appearances in Florida since the convention. Many pundits have speculated that without the Sunshine State, his path to the presidency is murky. And the I-4 corridor, including GOP stronghold Pasco County, could hold the key to winning the state.
