Lawmakers, university leaders protest potential cuts to Pell Grants
In response to a recent call to scale back Pell Grants as part of budget negotiations, two senators and the presidents of eight universities -- including Mark Rosenberg of Miami's Florida International University -- rallied in Washington on Tuesday.
They stood before a group of college students who've benefited from the need-based grants, urging legislators to make them a priority.
"If America is going to continue to be a superpower, it needs to have super educated young people," said Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland). "This is why we fight so hard."
Rosenberg touched on Florida universities' perpetual struggle with their own budget cuts, saying "We're willing to take our fair share, and we have, of sacrifice." But he said the Pell Grant program is one that should be insulated.
"Pell is a pillar of the American dream," he said.
