Legislature expands access to vouchers for special needs students
While school vouchers generally remain controversial in Florida, that's not the case when it relates to students with disabilities or other special needs.
The Florida Senate today unanimously agreed to expand the McKay Scholarship program by allowing children entering kindergarten to be eligible for the vouchers, which can be used at private schools that provide the needed services.
The bill also grants the Florida commissioner of education power to suspend or revoke a private school's participation in the program if it is found to have acted against the public interest. The Florida House unanimously approved this bill earlier in April.
