Leonard Sax visits as Hillsborough prepares for same-sex schools
TAMPA -- Curious about single-gender education? The guru himself, Dr. Leonard Sax, will be speaking tonight at 6 p.m. in the Middleton High School auditorium.
His visit comes as Hillsborough prepares to convert two middle schools -- Franklin and Ferrell -- into magnet academies for boys and girls respectively. The presentation is targeted toward the parents of potential students at those schools, but it's open to the public.
The changes are related to the struggles Franklin faced as a turnaround school under Florida's Differentiated Accountability model. While the school has earned two straight C grades, it has remained on a state watch list of troubled schools due to its failure to boost student achievement among at-risk subgroups. By adopting the single-gender model, Franklin essentially becomes a new school and leaves the list, avoiding further state interventions.
More from the district's press release on Leonard Sax's visit:
"Dr. Sax is a physician, psychologist, best-selling author and acknowledged national expert concerning gender differences in learning. He is the founder of the National Association for Single Sex Public Education (NASSPE), a not-for-profit organization that promotes knowledge of gender differences in classrooms and schools.
