Lerner: District should have planned better for neighborhood schools

Lerner Pinellas' transition to neighborhood schools was challenging and complicated, but could have been better, said school board member and candidate Linda Lerner.

"I believe the district's management of the transition was satisfactory," Lerner wrote in a questionairre for the St. Petersburg Times editorial board. "However in the preparation for this transition, there should have been recognition and planning for the result that some schools were going to receive much higher numbers of struggling students and would need added resources and support."

Lerner said she supports hiring an auditor who reports directly to the board. She also disagreed with pessimistic assessments of the district's status. "I do not think Pinellas is mired in problems," she wrote. "Pinellas, like most other districts in Florida, has many successes and many challenges and opportunities for improvement."

The questionairre includes more than a dozen questions. We'll run others soon.

Lerner and Brian Hawley are vying for the District 6 seat.
