Levy mom hits back against school paddling
Levy County mom Tenika Jones has a simple message for the public schools: "If they don't want us to hit our kids, they shouldn't either."
The Gainesville Sun reports that Jones' 5-year-old son is having medical problems and nightmares after being paddled, without his mother's permission, by his school principal.
Twenty-seven Florida counties including Levy still permit corporal punishment, despite efforts by some state leaders to discourage the practice.
Jones calls it child abuse and wants to see it end. She's begun working with the Southern Poverty Law Center and other groups toward that goal.
"I want them to stop," she told the Sun. "It doesn't make sense."
