Have you paid much attention to the deliberations of the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission? No? Maybe you should.

The group has ended its public hearings and now it's in the proposal phase, where members recommend constitutional amendments and statutory revisions they think would benefit Florida. Already, 20 ideas are in the hopper for the commission's various committees to consider. More are expected to come.

One that immediately catches our eye is former Senate president John McKay's proposal on taxes. He wants to eliminate all state sales tax exemptions and exclusions, and to put all the money toward education. The income would replace local property taxes for schools.

If approved by the commission, voters still would have to give this idea final ratification.
