Meeting for parents about new Largo IB

Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School is holding a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for parents who have questions about the new International Baccalaureate program coming to Largo High School.

Among those who will be attending: Largo High principal Marjorie Sundstrom; Bill Lawrence, the new associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction (and formerly the district's director of advanced studies); regional superintendent Barbara Hires; and Dee Burns, the district director of student assignment.

The meeting comes after concerns raised by some parents (and reported last week in the St. Petersburg Times) about the quality of the program, which will enroll its first class this fall.

The district fully expects the program to quickly become as successful as the highly regarded IB programs at St. Petersburg High and Palm Harbor University High.

Under the district's new attendance zones, IB-seeking students zoned for Clearwater, Largo, Seminole, Pinellas Park and Dixie Hollins high schools can apply only to the Largo program.
