More candidates emerge for Florida education commissioner

 Nine new candidates have applied for Florida education commissioner, including some notable ones. New to the list are:

Bret Schundler, recently fired as New Jersey education commissioner

Gerard Robinson, Virginia secretary of education

W.C. Gentry, chairman of the Duval County School Board

Stacia Smith, superintendent, Clark County, Ohio, Education Services Center. Smith is also in the running to head Ohio's education system.

Dennis Thompson, recently fired as Collier County schools superintendent

Lee Drury, virtual high school teacher, of Holiday, FL

Staci Gillen, Dunedin High School teacher

John Murphy, president of the Murphy Education Group in Ocean Ridge, FL. A top education leader in the 1990s, Murphy has been superintendent in Charlotte, N.C., and Prince George's County, Md.

Robert Ross, instructor at Royal Palm Academy in Bonita Springs, FL

One more candidate, charter school principal Oleh Bula, has withdrawn. The State Board of Education plans to interview finalists on June 20 in Tampa, and members said they might make their selection that day. See the full list attached below.
