More on Corey Givens Jr.'s educational credentials
Corey Givens Jr., a candidate for Pinellas County School Board District 7, this week sent the Tampa Bay Times editorial board a statement responding to this July 19 story about inconsistencies in his stated educational credentials. He has also posted his response on his candidate Facebook page.
The statement says this:
“Here are the facts: I took Dual enrollment courses at St. Petersburg College, Received an A.A. Certificate from FSU, and I am currently pursuing a B.A. in Mass Comm in Education from USF. If you call either of those schools they will tell you exactly the same thing. When I offered to bring in proof, the reporter declined to accept them (that was not printed), when I gave her the contact information to my advisers at those institutions she declined them (that was not printed).... So yes, I do believe justice was not served in that article. I do believe I can handle this job because our board is in desperate need of someone who will not crumble under pressure & someone who will stand up for the truth. I could take legal measures into settling this issue with the times, however our believe my energy needs to be put into my campaign & focusing on way to make Pinellas county student's education better than it is today. And voters should be doing the same! Thank you, Corey Givens, Jr.”
We stand by our story.
As the reporter who worked on the story, I also would like to note that the only contact information that was actually offered or exchanged in regard to this matter was the name and phone number for Florida State University spokesman Jeffery Seay. I provided Seay’s contact to Givens when he asked me who at FSU told me that Givens did not receive a bachelor’s degree from FSU, as Givens had claimed on his candidate website, his Times editorial board candidate questionnaire, his Facebook page and in interviews.
Contacted today, Seay said that Givens never did call him.
Below you will find, from Givens’ own campaign material, his varying statements regarding his educational credentials. The time stamps represent the times I printed out copies from those websites for my records.
