More graduation rate data in Pinellas (pity the guys)
The Pinellas school district crunched some more graduation rate data - a breakdown of the 2009-10 rates by race and gender - that you can see by clicking on the link below.
Here's one thing that jumps out: The guys. Next to their female peers, they're not doing too hot.
The district breakdown doesn't have a total male vs. female percentage, but it shows young men trailing in every major ethnic group. White males are 6.5 percentage points behind white females, Hispanic males are about 9 percentage points behind Hispanic females, black males are 10 percentage points behind black females.
This isn't new, of course, and it's not just a problem in Pinellas. (Nationally, the female graduation rate is about 7 percentage points higher than the male rate, according to this 2006 analysis.) But we wonder: Is the gender gap in grad rates (and elsewhere) getting the attention it deserves? If young women were that far behind young men, would it be more of a story?
