More info on Lastinger in Pinellas

August

As the Pinellas school board gets ready to discuss the Lastinger partnership at a workshop tomorrow, we wanted to offer a clarification and an update.

The clarification: As we've noted before, the oft-mentioned SRI International evaluation of the Lastinger program does NOT involve Pinellas schools. It only involves schools in Miami-Dade.

At last week’s school board meeting, Superintendent Julie Janssen implied that the study would involve Pinellas schools. “We are going to do a 4-year study,” she told the board. “We are going to use an outside group of SRI to measure this.”

After the meeting, Janssen told The Gradebook it was her understanding the study would involve Pinellas schools, but deferred to professional development director Lisa Grant for more information. We emailed Grant the next day and she said she would provide specifics the following day. We did not hear back.

We doublechecked with a Lastinger spokesman, who confirmed the SRI evaluation would only involve Miami-Dade schools. But he said the results will be applicable to Lastinger partner schools in other districts.

The update: We still have not heard any details about the “comprehensive evaluation plan” involving Lastinger efforts in Pinellas that Pinellas officials say is underway.

Grant told us in a July 15 email that the research and accountability department “has also created and begun to conduct a comprehensive evaluation plan” of the Lastinger program in Pinellas. She referred us to R&A for more info. We emailed officials there twice, on July 18 and July 21, but did not hear back. On July 23, a Saturday, deputy superintendent Jim Madden emailed us to say he would get an update for us by the end of the day Monday. We did not hear back.

We asked board members by email yesterday afternoon if they were aware of the evaluation plan and, if so, if they heard any details they could share. Two responded.

“I have no details to share with you because I have no information or understanding that there is that plan,” Linda Lerner told us in a voice mail message.

Referring to the workshop, Terry Krassner told us in a short email, “I hope all of our questions can be answered.”

An additional subject was added to the workshop schedule yesterday. The board will also discuss the chief turnaround officer and principal on assignment.
