Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Moving on at the Florida Department of Education

25

January

The front line staff in the Florida Department of Education's media and communications office has stayed the same for years. But at the top, they come and go.

Communications director Erin Rock is the latest to depart, after about two years on the job. She's taking off to become the staff director in the Florida House office of public information, a newly reorganized department that is getting a facelift after many lawmakers felt they weren't getting a fair shake on some key bills.

Notably, Senate Bill 6 was one of those where they felt Floridians were getting too much misinformation.

Rock told the Gradebook her job, which starts in a week, will be to work with reporters and the general public about "what the legislation actually does" and to make lawmakers more accessible to talk issues and facts. She didn't know if or when the DOE would replace her.
