National survey: Teachers, public at odds on tenure, merit pay

More people than not think teachers should be paid more, local taxes should be increased to fund public schools and their schools are of good quality, according to the latest annual survey from Harvard's Program in Education Policy and Governance. But the same survey also found a big disconnect between the public and teachers on tenure and student-test-score-based merit pay.

Twenty percent of general public respondents said they completely or somewhat favored tenure, compared to 53 percent of teachers. Meanwhile, 47 percent of the general public respondents said they completely or somewhat favored basing teacher salaries in part on standardized test scores, compared to 18 percent of teachers.
