Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Need an SB 6 fix? Here's more of what people are saying ...

U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, seeking the Democratic nomination for the same Senate seat that Charlie Crist wants, urges Crist to veto the bill.

So, too, do the Florida School Boards Association, the Broward School Board, Leon County schools superintendent Jackie Pons and a whole host of school teacher groups around Florida.

Meanwhile, the drumbeat of supporters gets a little louder to compete with the organized opposition.

Rick Hess of the American Enterprise Institute calls SB 6 a game-changer for Florida education, while a host of groups including the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Florida TaxWatch and Associated Industries of Florida held a news conference today talking up the pros of the legislation.

Early reports from Facebook have education commissioner Eric J. Smith and chancellor Frances Haithcock as no-shows, though they were scheduled to attend. We'll let you know more about that as we get more information.

Will Crist veto the bill? The Magic Eight Ball says "Ask again later."
