Looking to make a splash at your next football tailgate? Need a party bus? How about a relatively low cost addition to your home?

The Hernando County School District might have the answer for you: used school buses.

The district is in the process of trying to sell 49 used school buses at a cost of somewhere in the $4,000 to $5,000 range. Could be a little less, could be more. They'll likely be selling them at an online auction later this month or in early November.

But don’t expect one that looks like it came right out of the factory.

Each of used buses in the fleet averages about 219,000 miles and has been around for about 11 years.

Most come with air conditioning, but some don’t, said Doug Compton, director of transportation for the district.

All in all, the district is looking to net about $200,000 and $250,000.

That’s better than the last time they sold their used buses.

At the last auction, they netted about $3,500 a bus. By comparison, Pinellas County earned about $6,000 a bus at this spring, Compton said.

Hernando’s used buses are not currently part of their active fleet. The district still has roughly 160 buses serving 109 routes.
