Never mind. Cathi Martin, Pasco County School Board member, won't resign

Cmartin Three weeks ago, Pasco School Board member Cathi Martin told her colleagues in an e-mail that "due to on going health issues, I feel that I will be unable to finish my term."

Today, she released a statement saying she'd be sticking around.

"After much soul searching and consultation with my family and friends, I would like to notify you that I have come to realize that my resignation would not be in the best interest of the School Board, the students, the teachers or the people who elected me," Martin wrote in a letter to superintendent Heather Fiorentino.

She acknowledged her poor attendance, which prompted three lawmakers to call for her removal, and said she is "committed to fulfilling the duties of my elected position." The next board meeting is April 21.

Martin did not respond to calls seeking further comment. The lawmakers who called for her ouster told the Gradebook they stand by their request to the governor.

Dear Mrs. Fiorentino:

I have spent the past several days reflecting on the e-mail sent to you on March 12, 2009, in which I notified you of my intentions toward resigning my position as School Board member for District 3.

After much soul searching and consultation with my family and friends, I would like to notify you that I have come to realize that my resignation would not be in the best interest of the School Board, the students, the teachers or the people who elected me of Pasco County.

Although I have had to overcome a number of personal issues that interfered with my attendance at Board meetings, I am committed to fulfilling the duties of my elected position.

I look forward to fulfilling my term and doing all that I can do to ensure the continued excellence of Pasco County's education system.

Catherine E. Martin
School Board member
District 3
