Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

New chairman for House education committee

proctor.jpgPasco County's dominance over education policy in the Florida House has ended with the announcement of a new committee structure and new leadership.

Rep. Bill Proctor, R-St. Augustine, will chair the Education Committee, which will oversee all education issues kindergarten through university. Proctor is chancellor of Flagler College and a former member of the Board of Education. The committee will have two subcommittees -- K-20 Innovation and K-20 Competitiveness -- whose leaders have not been named.

Last year's K-12 Policy Committee chairman, Rep. John Legg of New Port Richey, will become speaker pro tem but tells the Gradebook he expects to still have a hand in some education issues. And last year's Education Policy Council chairman, Rep. Will Weatherford of Wesley Chapel, will chair the redistricting committee as he prepares to become Speaker in 2012 if the Republicans hold their majority.
