New Pinellas school superintendent touring schools
Mike Grego, Pinellas County's new school superintendent, has been in the job a little more than a week. It seems one of his top priorities is to get out into the schools - and not just for a quick tour. He's been spending about two hours at each school, meeting with school administrators and looking at academic data.
Grego thanked board members this week for being patient with him as he spends time in the schools, making him a little less available for their phone calls. Grego said he's having "pointed conversations" at the schools about what has worked, what hasn't and how to move forward.
So far, he's visited these schools: Mildred Helms Elementary in Largo; Largo Middle; Largo High; Ponce de Leon Elementary in Largo; Pinellas Park Elementary; Skyview Elementary in Pinellas Park; Melrose Elementary, Maximo Elementary and Lakewood Elementary, all in St. Petersburg; and Belleair Elementary.
Grego also had his first meeting with principals - what he calls a faculty meeting - and attended some community meetings. He called his first week in the school district "wonderful."
