New Pinellas superintendent to start Wednesday

20

September

Mike Grego, new superintendent of Pinellas County Schools, is expected to start Wednesday, following formal approval of his contract by the school board Tuesday at its regular meeting. Superintendent John Stewart, who has held the job on an interim basis for a year, will step down Tuesday night.

We haven't seen the actual contract yet, but board attorney David Koperski sent the school board an email last night with the highlights. They include:

*$240,000 in base salary

*A three-year term, from Wednesday to June 30, 2015

*$750 a month car allowance

*The school board will contribute $24,000 a year to a tax-deferred plan

*20 weeks of pay for severance, if the board terminates without cause

Other details should be available when the contract is signed today. Grego's compensation package is more generous than former superintendent Julie Janssen's. Janssen was paid about $200,000 a year, with a $900 monthly car allowance and a $250 monthly communication allowance. The board contributed 6.5 percent of her base salary to a tax-deferred plan each year.

You can read and compare the contracts below.
