Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

New York teachers hurting, too

It's not just Florida districts that are considering teacher layoffs as the education funding cliff approaches this spring.

Today Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he wants to lay off 4,278 teachers in New York City -- and let another 1,500 slots go unfilled through attrition -- in an effort to close his own city's budget gap. By one economist's estimate, 160,000 teachers nationwide have already been told they may not have a job come fall.

Clearly we're entering a pink slip season unlike anything seen since at least the 1980s, and the depth of Florida's recession and cutbacks suggest things could be especially tough here. Have you gotten a letter indicating your job may be on the chopping block? Any grim memos getting stuffed into the mailboxes of teachers and support staff? Please let us know and we'll get the word out.
