Many teachers in Florida have not received a raise in four years.

On average, the News Service of Florida reports, teacher pay has declined almost $1,200.

A cool new interactive map by State Impact illustrates the basic math fact that averages blur specifics. On it, you see that Pasco teachers have seen their pay drop by 3 percent, as did Pinellas and Manatee teachers. Hillsborough pay dipped 1 percent. Broward educators saw their salaries decline by 15 percent, worst in Florida.

By contrast, the report shows Hernando teachers earning 7 percent more over the same time frame, and Sarasota teachers gaining 5 percent.

These, too, are just averages. But they make the point that not all teachers are suffering the state's economic crisis in the same way.
