Not a done deal

You've heard the speculation by now about who the next education commissioner will be. One paper said former K-12 chancellor Jim Warford has the inside track. Another touted House Schools and Learning Council chairman Joe Pickens as the leading candidate. Even the Gradebook has tried to keep tabs on who's interested.

Well, all the talk has fired up the State Board of Education, whose members railed today against any implication that the governor and some select person have cut a deal to run the Department of Education. Chairman T. Willard Fair and others made clear that they remain committed to conducting a national search, and they agreed to negotiate a contract with a search firm this week.

"The reason we have a national search firm in place is to ensure that we have a very open, very clear, very transparent process," DOE spokeswoman Jennifer Fennell told the Gradebook after the meeting ended. "We've laid out a process and this is the process we're going to follow. No one has been selected yet."
