Not many in Pasco take advantage of opportunity scholarships

Changes to Florida's opportunity scholarship law allow about 2,100 Pasco County students to transfer to higher performing schools, with transportation provided. (That's in comparison to none a year ago.)

Few are taking advantage.

So far, the district reports that parents of just five children have asked to switch schools through the program. Another 40 or so plan to move through the choice options provided to the same four schools through No Child Left Behind. The deadline is Monday.

Notably, a few families have contacted the district to let them know that they're simply not interested in switching schools, regardless of their schools' low grade and accountability status. They asked if they could apply to stay put.

Wonder why.
