Oh boy! Three extra months to fight
Each year around now, Florida's top performing schools learn how much their school recognition fund checks will be.
They get $75 per student, based on the previous year's enrollment. And the faculty and advisory committees often feud over exactly how to spend the money, though they essentially have just three choices -- teacher bonuses, school equipment or temporary staff.
And lucky them, this year there's more time to bicker over the money. Because of changes to the state school grading system, particularly with high schools, lawmakers extended the deadline for schools to decide how to use the recognition funds from Nov. 1 to Feb. 1. (See subsection 4 of the law for the change.)
The money is expected to be distributed to elementary and middle schools within the next few weeks, and to high schools after their grades are released later in the fall.
