Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

One week, $1 million

File this one under "only in Beverly Hills."

The LA Times reports that volunteers in the tiny Beverly Hills, California, school district have set out to raise $1 million in a week to stave off pending layoffs and program cuts.

They're walking the streets, sending flyers to every home and handing out contribution envelopes in classrooms.

"Campaigns have urgency," organizer Jonathan Prince, a veteran television writer and producer who chairs the Beverly Hills Education Foundation, told the paper. "You've got to cry fire if there is a fire."

Anything like this happening in Florida as the Legislature moves to shrink per-student funding by $540?
