Parents bristle at paying to volunteer at school
Our friends on the Whoa, Momma! parenting blog take issue with the idea of requiring expensive background checks, costing upwards of $100, for a parent to chaperone a field trip, arguing that Jerry Sandusky would have passed a Level II background check with flying colors. They argue this is merely a way to make the adults feel better, like they are doing something. "What galls me is this comes at time when the school budget for paper -- yes PAPER -- has been slashed and teachers are begging parents to donate printing cartridges so they can print out their tests. That $100 per volunteer would sure buy a lot of paper and ink."
This issue came up at a recent Pinellas County School Board discussion about enforcing a policy that requires that volunteers who are going to be unsupervised with children get a more rigorous screening - a Level II background check.
