Pasco alternative school still awaits principal

Rick Saylor left the Irvin Education Center in Dade City weeks ago to become principal of Moore-Mickens Education Center.

School district officials have yet to name Saylor's replacement, instead assigning a revolving door of assistant principals and department supervisors to oversee operations at the alternative school. The first ad for the position generated just one applicant, prompting the district to readvertise the job to see if there was any additional interest.

The second ad, which closed Wednesday, brought in just two more hopefuls.

Assistant superintendent Jim Davis said he hopes to have someone running the school soon. But he wants to make sure the candidate is the best fit for Irvin, which along with Schwettman Education Center has undergone some changes in programs and educational philosophy lately.

"You don't want a revolving door," Davis said, explaining that the school deserves a committed leader. "You want to make a decision so there is stability."

Once that position is filled, the district will turn its attention to choosing new principals for Schrader Elementary and Rushe Middle schools, both of which will see their current leaders retire within the next two months.
