Pasco High NJROTC gets a little help from its friends
State Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, was disappointed to learn that the U.S. Navy plans to shut down Pasco High School's Naval Junior ROTC program.
"It's a great program," he told the Gradebook. "The discipline, the camaraderie, the support that the cadets get from each other."
So despite signals from the Navy that the decision, based on low enrollment, won't be overturned, Fasano has sent a letter to Rear Adm. David Steindl of the Naval Service Training Command seeking reconsideration.
"While it is understandable that cost must be considered during these difficult economic times, successful programs like the Pasco High NJROTC have value far beyond what can be quantified by its fiscal impact alone," he wrote. "The personal impact can only be quantified by the changes made in each and every cadet’s life. Those changes come without a price tag."
Fasano also has asked Florida U.S. senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio to speak out on behalf of the Pasco High program.
"I don't know how much of an effect it will have," Fasano said of his effort. "But we just can't stand idly by and let the NJROTC program be taken away from Pasco High."
