Pasco School Board to consider policy updates



The Pasco School Board continues to refine its district policy manual, with a workshop set for Tuesday afternoon where members will review some proposals that were tabled at past meetings. Some of the changes could cause animated conversation. Among them:

The "Tobacco Use" policy would become the "Tobacco-Free Environment" policy. The revised rule would ban all use of tobacco, including smokeless tobacco and electronic, vapor, look-alike and related smoking devices. It would remove reference to grandfather clauses for employees at work sites opened before July 1, 1996, and instead make clear that this policy is aimed squarely at students.

The "Political Activities" policy would change to prohibit employees who engage in politics from using district "time, facilities, electronic network, District provided wireless communication devices or personnel of the school system to engage in such activities." It's already been pointed out that the district's network is generally open to public use.

The "Web Pages" policy would bar teachers from requiring students to go to staff members' personal web pages, including Facebook, to retrieve or submit assignments, or to get grades and class materials. 

All of these items could turn into talkers under the right conditions. United School Employees of Pasco president Lynne Webb observed that they don't seem to stem from issues directly related to anything going on in Pasco schools right now, and suggested that the board should hear from employees about what seems necessary here rather than just discussing whatever Neola, the company that manages the district policy manual, proposes.

The workshop is set to take place immediately following the board's meeting Tuesday morning.
