Pasco school bus drivers file grievance over water drinking rules

16

September

When Pasco County school bus drivers returned to work this fall, they learned that they no longer could take a drink of water if sitting in their driver's seat -- even if the bus isn't moving. (See the policy attached below.)

That got a lot of drivers, whose unairconditioned buses often go well above 100 degrees, steamed.

Today, three-quarters of the district's 535 transportation employees filed a grievance (attached below) against the policy, arguing it goes too far.

"My policy rule is no eating or drinking on the bus," driver John Kilousky said. "I will not do that while children are on the bus. ... (But) you should be able to drink right there in the seat if you’re not moving."

District spokeswoman Summer Romagnoli said the rules had stated that drivers may not eat or drink while operating their vehicle, and the change was intended to clarify what "not operating the vehicle" means. The United School Employees of Pasco has asked that the new language be deleted. Story here.
