Pasco school district proposes cell tower at Sunlake High
Hoping to generate some additional revenue, the Pasco County school district administration is asking the School Board to approve a 10-year land lease with four 5-year renewal options so a Tampa company can build a cell phone tower on the Sunlake High School campus in Land O'Lakes.
The district would receive $15,000 a year in rent, plus an additional amount for each tenant on the tower. The annual rent would increase 4 percent each year.
District officials said recent radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure studies completed for a cell tower at Long Middle School in Wesley Chapel showed that the tower would not exceed federal guidelines. Similar findings have not satisfied parents in some Hillsborough County communities, where residents have successfully battled cell phone towers proposed for school campuses.
The resistance to the tower at Long Middle was limited. Any predictions for the reaction in Land O'Lakes? Time is short. The board has this item on its agenda for Tuesday evening.
