Pasco schoolteacher writes protest song about SB 6

31

March

Lots of Florida schoolteachers plan to take to the streets this week to picket lawmakers over SB 6, which they say will change public education for the worse.

Wayne D'Anunzio, a gifted teacher at Pasco's Bayonet Point Middle School, has put his protest to music.

"I really would love to do more to impress upon the Legislature that they truly need to be in the trenches (for
more than a pomp and circumstance visit) and investigate before they legislate!" he tells the Gradebook.

The money verse:

We’re gonna straighten up this crooked mess,
We, the
GOP, and all the rest.
Goodbye benefits, tenure and summer rest.
We’ll base your job and pay on some silly test
Just a two-hour exam once a year at best.

Check it out. Then read on for the lyrics.

LET'S LEGISLATE, by Wayne D'Anunzio

Gather around all ye disgruntled Patriots.
There is a story I have to sell.

VERSE
I’m here thrashing to make my vision clear.
Never mind my screw-ups in previous years.
It’s not my fault the economy is on its rear.
We need to focus on some real issues here.
Take the heat off; concentrate and educate!

Look at those teachers over there.
Why that tenure sure isn’t fair.
Any other job they’d be fired.
I’d make them wish they’d never been hired,
To he** with all their experience and education.

CHORUS
Hey, let’s legislate, y’all for it’s too late.
Hurry up and pass that bill.  Don’t look; sign it at will!
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t you hesitate; we have things to do.
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t you hesitate; we have things to do.

VERSE
We’re gonna straighten up this crooked mess,
We, the  GOP, and all the rest.
Goodbye benefits, tenure and summer rest.
We’ll base your job and pay on some silly test
Just a two-hour exam once a year at best.

Never mind your sacrifice and devotion to kids.
We’ll give you more to do with less; you bet.
We’re not too fond of you; we confess.
Just shut up or put up, and do your best,
Cause we’re not giving consequences to all the rest.

CHORUS
Hey, let’s legislate, y’all for it’s too late.
Hurry up and pass that bill.  Don’t look; sign it at will!
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t you hesitate; we have things to push through.
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t you hesitate; we have things to push through.
(Instrumental—play last two lines of chorus once)

VERSE
Don’t think that I ever have to be in your room
To know what changes are needed and soon.
Never mind that there’s not a study I can claim
That will link that test to any student gains.
Be rest assured, though, I’ll have my fame.

One final thing before I get passing,
I’ll take away your livelihood and passion,
And all my people on my plan a cashing.
We’ll replace all of the old with the new,
Cause it’s more cost effective and cheaper too.

BRIDGE (arpeggio)
Just remember one more thing.
You fix those underachievers, hoodlums and parents too.
All of them are counting on you!
Don’t whine and complain about what you can’t control.
It’s about time you’re job wasn’t such an easy stroll!

Hey, let’s legislate; don’t hesitate.
Hey, let’s legislate before it’s too late.
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t hesitate.
Hey, let’s legislate before it’s too late.
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t hesitate.
Hey, let’s legislate before it’s too late.
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t hesitate.
Hey, let’s legislate before it’s too late.
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t hesitate.
Hey, let’s legislate before it’s too late.
Hey, let’s legislate; don’t hesitate.

OUTTRO
You’ve got some nerve with your half-baked ideas
Talking about us bull elephants crashing our way around Bushville
Forcing our ideals and rhetoric at will.
No, no, there’s no party hopping here.  We’re not crossing any lines.
Ah, yea, you probably think those donkeys have class.
Well, he**, they’re just trying to save their assets.
Yea, we’ll legislate.  No sovereignty here!
